Event Recap: Enhancing Project Management and Safety in Construction

Updated: Dec 16, 2024

The American Academy of Project Management (AAPM), Hong Kong Chapter, would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our distinguished speakers: Mark Ashton, Director of Ashton Associates Ltd, and Dennis Wong and Justin Lo, Partners at Cocking & Co. We greatly appreciated their impactful presentations at our recent Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminar titled "Valuable Lessons from the Grenfell Tower Incident and Its Implications for Hong Kong's Construction Industry," held on December 4, 2024. Their expertise shed light on critical issues in project management and safety within the construction industry, offering invaluable lessons for professionals in the field.

Mark's presentation on the Grenfell fire tragedy of 2017 delved into the findings of the Phase 2 Grenfell Inquiry Report, released in September this year. He explored failures in procurement, design, and construction, as well as regulatory shortcomings and misrepresentations by manufacturers, providing a sobering reminder of the need for accountability and meticulous project management practices.

Dennis and Justin provided a compelling analysis of manslaughter charges within the construction industry. They discussed the responsibilities of key stakeholders, the distinction between negligence and manslaughter, and the serious legal consequences of gross negligence, reinforcing the importance of safety and regulatory compliance.

Mr. Alan Kwan, President of the American Academy of Project Management (AAPM), Hong Kong Chapter, presented Mr Dennis Wong, Mr Justin Lo and Mr Mark Ashton with Certificate of Appreciations for their valuable perspectives during the CPD session.

Again, we sincerely appreciate the time and effort our speakers dedicated to our event, which provided a valuable platform for understanding the critical challenges in construction project management and safety.

We thank all attendees for their participation and our speakers for their exceptional contributions. Let’s work together to create a safer, more responsible construction industry. Stay tuned for updates on our future events!
